Where to Fish for Bass
October 29th, 2005So you want to catch a few bass? One thing you have to keep in mind when fishing for bass is that they are predators. They hide in weeds, behind stumps, rocks and branches and grab their prey as it passes in the current. They are basically lazy and do not move around much except when they are frenzy feeding in late spring and fall. For the most part, bass want their prey to come to them. Cast your line near obstacles in the current, or in grassy areas.
Fishing grassy areas near shore can be either frustrating or highly successful. Cast to the outside of the area and look for indentations near the grass line. A stump of fallen tree near the outer edge is a perfect place to catch bass.
Bass feel secure only when safely hidden. Think like a bass. Where would you go if you were a fish and wanted to be safe? These hiding places not only give a sense of security, they allow the bass to grab its next meal out of the current.
If fishing the outer edge of the grass line isn’t successful, cast your bait to the inside and work it slowly toward you. If it’s raining, watch the ground to see which way the water flows. It will twist around and seek the path that has the least resistance. A creek bed works the same way. Fish near tree stumps, limbs and grassy areas on the inside of the curve. That is where you’ll find the bass.
Older docks can be bass heaven, because they grow a lot of algae. Bait fish come to feed on the algae and the bass come to feed on the bait fish. Bass also lurk under the walkway at the back. This is another great place to fish for bass.
These tips will help you to find the bass you want to catch to ensure a positive bass fishing experience. Grab your gear and head out to one of these spots for a good catch.

Terrific article. I enjoy fishing and my husband and I used to go hundreds of times each year. I don’t know why we didn’t go even once this year. We must get back into it. It is not expensive, gets you out into the Great Outdoors and there’s nothing like the thrill of the catch.

This is a great article. I can hardly believe it’s written by a woman. I guess that means that burning those bras in the 60’s really was worth it. This lady writes an awesome fish story.

I have caught a bass before. They are fun to catch. I have caught lots of different fish. Fishing is fun and it’s wonderful to feel the fish wiggling on the line. If we don’t eat the fish we catch, we practice catch and release. There’s lots of places to go fishing in Nova Scotia. I don’t really care for ocean fishing.

I once caught a largemouth bass that measure 26 inches in length in Thessalon, Ontario, when we were vacationing. I cast near a huge boulder right near shore and suddenly, it struck. What a fabulous experience. I’ve never had the luck to catch a fish of that size again. Maybe one day.

I’ve fished for bass in a few states and once in northern Ontario. The bass fishing is great there. Does anyone have any information on walleye. I’ve always wanted to fish for them. I know walleye are also fished in northern Ontario, as are Musky.

Fishing is a great sport. It doesn’t matter what you catch or if you catch anything. It’s great to feel a good sized fish on your line, but what is the best is getting out into the great outdoors and enjoying nature.
