What Really Causes Alzheimer?

February 8th, 2006

As we grow older, we will have to deal with the various ailments and conditions that come with time. It all starts out after college, when we become to focus on our work, we will be suffering from the bulge. However the more serious diseases we will have to encounter comes later on in our life, especially when we are not able to take care of ourselves.

Some conditions and diseases we encounter when we grow older are a result of unhealthy lifestyle we have lived when we were younger. There are some diseases however that just come out of nowhere. One of those diseases that just happen without any reason at all is Alzheimer’s diseases.

Up to now, scientists still have no exact reason why Alzheimer’s happen to some people. What they do know though is that Alzheimer’s is a situation where the brain cells become damaged and eventually die.

Our brain is made up of billions nerve cells also known as neurons. The neurons are the things on your brain that helps you think, remember and even feel. A person with Alzheimer’s will have its neurons die slowly. As they die, they will create signaling problems within the brain.

The hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease are clumps and knots. These clumps and knots were found by the neurologist after whom the disease was named (Dr. Alois Alzheimer). Here are some theories of scientists why these clumps and knots get involved with Alzheimer.

• Tangles or Knots – a protein called tau helps the normal function of the internal function of the brain. The threads of tau become twisted in people who suffer from Alzheimer. Researchers believe that when these tau get all tangled up they will eventually cause serious damage to the neurons and eventually die.
• Clumps or plaques – they are made up of harmless protein called beta-amyloid. Researchers believe that deposits of this protein may cause the early on stages of Alzheimer.

Another reason that some researchers have observed the cause of Alzheimer is due to inflammation. The inflammation of the brain is usually caused by infection or response to injury that is a natural part of the healing process.

Scientists suspect what triggers the inflammation is the immune cells that are trying to get rid of all the dead cells and waste products in the brain, such as the beta-amyloid stuck between the neurons. When removing the beta-amyloid, the inflammation may be triggered.

The main cause of Alzheimer’s up to know is still being debated. There are still lots of studies being made to further understand how a person can suffer from this very depressing condition.
