Tooth Whitening Tips
November 13th, 2007To have that winning smile, one needs to have clean, beautiful teeth. A nice set of pearly whites can go a long way towards building self confidence and self esteem. For those with teeth discoloration, tooth whitening (also called tooth bleaching) can help. Some tips ae written below.
Teeth discoloration is a common problem because it has a variety of causes. A lot of the foods we eat, including sweets, are known culprits. Other reasons are nicotine, caffeine flavored drinks and commercial fruit juices, which are sugar rich. What happens is that these foods generate a layer (called a pellicle film) over the enamel, the substance that protects the teeth. Over time this new film goes through the enamel. The results are teeth darkening and stains.
Mouthwash and ordinary toothpastes cannot remove these elements; tooth whitening on the other hand, can restore its luster and whiteness. It works by inducing a chemical reaction that removes teeth discoloration. Ingredients vary of course, but all tooth whiteners contain elements of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
Today it is easier than ever to obtain tooth whitening products and bleaching solutions. Qualified dentists are available everywhere. In office bleaching may take several minutes and more than a single session, but the work is performed by your dentist. But if you are the do it yourself type, tooth whitening products can be purchased from any good drugstore. Here the chemical agent is placed on a mouthguard and worn. The duration varies with each product, of course, some needing to be worn overnight, while others for a period of several hours a day.
Are there risks in tooth whiteners? Reported side effects include gum irritation and burns. If you have highly sensitive teeth or have undergone a dental operation recently you should consult your doctor.
Your dentist will then be able to determine exactly what kind of tooth whitener and mouthguard is suitable for you. If you feel that the irritation is caused by an allergic reaction to the chemicals, stop using the product and consult a specialist. In most cases however, particularly over-the-counter whitening products, the problem is often due to an ill fitting mouthguard. Always follow the directions diligently.
Once you have removed those stains, steps should be taken to insure the problem does not recur. Stay away from, or at least limit your intake of tobacco, cigarettes, candies, chocolates etc. Not only will this facilitate in maintaining the whiteness of your teeth longer, but it will also help the rest of your body stay fit and in the pink of health.
Whether the preferred method is in office bleaching or at home whitening, the truth is that there is no longer any reason to put up with discolored teeth. With the array of tooth whiteners available, there is every reason in the world to smile.
