The Best Superpower for a Superhero
March 12th, 2007It’s a debate that’s been argued over by many a comic geek for decades. What is the best superpower?
To answer this question I will quickly cover the most stereotypically chosen powers often debated about, which are: walking through walls/invisibility, strength/invulnerability, mind control, and flight.
Walking through walls/Invisibility:
Although this would no doubt be nifty it isn’t practical. People who always say this is the best power claim that they would use it to rob a bank. Logistically however, it may not be so easy if you think it through. Just because you can pass through walls or turn invisible, doesn’t mean that the money you are carrying can. On a matter of principal there are too many questions that can’t be answered beforehand, therefore too many risks.
Strength/Invulnerability:
Again this would be mighty impressive, I’d love to be able to Hulk-out or deflect bullets, but again let’s think this through. It seems whenever someone talks about powers for superheroes they always end up saying they’d use their powers for crime. This is no different. Sure you could rob a bank, and likely get away with it, but the police would easily know who you are and never leave you alone. They’d just keep coming after you with bigger weapons in an attempt to arrest you. You’d have to live in hiding and on the run. You’d never have a moments rest and let’s face it they’d probably figure out a way to seize any money that you tried to spend.
Mind Control: This one is a topper. Who needs to rob a bank when you can tell them to just give you money, or better yet get someone else to rob the bank for you? You could even get away with it by making the authorities forget who you are. You’d even be the most powerful person in the world, which would literally be at your feet. This power would be the best…for awhile. You could only be the king of the world for so long before you’ve seen, done, and own everything. Then what? Boredom and insanity. Plus the nagging questions in your mind would arise like “Does anyone genuinely like me, or is it just because I’m mind controlling everyone?”
Flight: It is often over-looked and may sound limp, but this is by far the best power. Why? Have you ever had a dream where you were flying? Remember how awesome and exhilarating that felt? Imagine being able to do that for real whenever you want. It would be an instant vacation. You could go leave your troubles behind on the ground, go wherever you want, see the world from above. Total freedom. It’s likely that you could live to be 100 and never get sick of being able to fly. Plus there’s no guilt associated, and although it may help you rob a bank there would be no need to. Why? Because someone who could fly, if they revealed this in a very public fashion, would be an instant celebrity and make millions on endorsements and TV/film appearances. You would have to reveal it in a very public and known fashion that would get noticed, keeping it a secret would probably get you dissected by the government. If done right you would be set for life and never have to live with the guilt of being a crook. The power of flight would by far be the best.

I would agree that flight would be good, but I would also say that shape-shifting would be cool. Who needs to work out when you can simply tuck in the tummy, blow up some biceps and you’d be looking sharp within seconds. I know that would be covering up self-esteem issues, but still it’d be cool.

Don’t forget how it would get flying up high! You Shape-shifting would be pretty ncie too, and so would super speed.

Aren’t we all forgetting one of the most classic powers…!? Weather control, you can effectively fly using the wind and also have the ability for instant sunshine, a storm or wateva u want. Surely this is the best power

Na the best power is time and space monipulation. You could freeze time and teleport anywhere it would be so cool.

I would like telekinetic powers. You could control things, even people from far distances, you could be indestructable with a telekinetic force field, you could use it to fly, its the best

It would be hard to beat a more evolved version of the basic Sue Storm Richards package, intelligently managed: invisibility plus force fields, with the stipulation that you could operate both at once, extend the invisibility to anything you touched, and, with exercise, get really creative with the force fields. You could generate the same results as if you had flight, superstrength, invulnerability, telekinesis, and shapeshifting all at once. But there is one power that is better, but it hardly qualifies as a superpower because supposedly there are real people who can actually do it: perceive and read auras. Nobody would ever be able to lie to you because you could see the color of deception in their aura. Think of the advantages in politics, business, and personal relationships. You would also be the best diagnostician in the world, of mental as well as physical ailments.

I agree with the shapeshifters. wouldn’t it be cool to be able to turn into anything u want?

The writer at the top discounts ‘Walking through walls’, ‘Invisibility’, ‘Strength’, ‘Invulnerability’ & ‘Mind control’.. all on the premise that none of them could be used to rob a bank.
Then they select ‘Flight’ as the best power to have???
But you can’t rob a bank with flight either, and the argument is clearly biased simply because the writer has some nice dreams about flying.
Flying is an awful superpower on its own. Fly too fast too quickly and you’ll black out. Fly too high and you’ll pass out or get very cold.
Once the novelty wears off, it’s just pants!
