Smell and Taste

October 6th, 2005

Did you know that holding your nose while eating makes a potato taste like an apple or an onion?

When you eliminate your sense of smell, some foods have no taste or an entirely different taste than normal. The reason this happens is because your sense of smell contributes largely to the flavor of food. Your taste buds contribute to common characteristics of food such as salty, sweet, bitter or sour, however, the sense of smell contributes to the distinguishing flavor of foods. For example, chocolate and vanilla have different flavors even though both are sweet. This explains why when you have a cold or stuffy nose, food suddenly loses its flavor.

Hold your nose, and you will be able to eat almost anything!
