Odd Superstition

October 3rd, 2005

Throughout the history of humanity there were always moments where superstitions rules the land. A broken mirror meant bad luck for life, walking under a ladder would give you nightmares for months, and countless black cats were in pet shops as no one wanted to be seen close to them. Although humans got a grip on themselves lately, superstitions are still all over the world. In historic sense, superstitions were everything, but now they seem to be more for entertainment purposes then for anything else. Centuries ago you were commended for throwing dust over your left shoulder, now that action would net you a seat in the insane asylum. While most of us don’t believe much of anything anymore, the following are some of the strangest superstitions in the world. Whether you want to impress your friends or just get a simple chuckle out of these facts, sit back, relax, and read about yet another part of the strange world we live in.

1. The ancient Roman’s believed that that the moon was a sign of prosperity. However, it was also believed that looking at the moon for the first time through a mirror or glass would ensure bad fortune for the next six months or until the next full moon. The Romans believed that touching a silver metal while watching the moon would bring much more silver to the person in the future. Thus they always carried silver coins in their pockets in order to be able to touch the unique metal while glancing at the first sight of the moon.

2. People tend to believe that stumbling while leaving anywhere from your house is bad luck. If you stumble it is believed you should delay your trip for the period of one day. If a person stumbles multiple times during a vacation it is advised to end the vacation immediately.

3. Horseshoe nails can be used to make a ring that will endure good luck for years to come. However, if a ring out of toenails is worn, it will instate bad luck on the wearer until it is burned in a fire.

4. Owls have always been associated with ghosts, Halloween, and horror movies. In history, owls were believed to be bad luck and people tried to avoid them at all costs on the street. In order to fight off the bad luck that came from the sight of an owl, a person would turn their clothes inside out to ward off any negative vibes.

5. The right side of the bed is considered to be the lucky side. If a person accidentally gets up on the left side of the bed, they can counter the bad luck by doing a couple of things. The right sock and the right shoe must come on before the left. So essentially, a person has to put on his right sock, then his right shoe, then his left sock, then his left shoe. In that exact order to ward off the bad luck cause by getting up on the wrong side of the bed.

The superstitions in the world go back in history many years. While not many people still believe them, they were popular in historic sense, and still are entertaining the common folk to this day. While these superstitions may not appeal to your personal life, they’ll surely give you a good chuckle, or at least a useless history lesson. The World Wide Web offers a more complete listing of superstitions for you to browse through, all you have to do is research.
