Moon Fact
October 20th, 2005The moon is 225,745 miles away from the Earth and has a radius of 1,080 miles, a diameter of 2,160 miles and weighs 81 Quintillion tons. The surface area of the moon is 14,658,000 square miles or 9.4 billion acres.
The moon orbits 384,4000 kilometers away from the earth.
The surface temperature of the moon during the day is 273 degrees Fahrenheit and -244 degrees Fahrenheit at night.
The moon is moving away from the earth 1.5 inches each year.
The moon is not round…it is egg shaped and the larger end is pointed towards the earth.
The first landing on the moon was on July 20, 1969, and the last was in December of 1972.
The moon causes the tides in the ocean. The moon’s gravitation is stronger on the side of the earth that is closer to the moon and weaker on the opposite side. Since the earth’s oceans and land are not perfectly rigid, they bulge out towards the direction of the moon, and one opposite, away from the moon. Because the earth rotates much faster than the moon (Earth rotates at 1000 mph and the moon only 10 mph) the bulge moves around the earth approximately once per day providing the oceans with two high tides each day.
