Handling Hot Peppers without Pain

February 28th, 2007

Have you ever tried to slice or dice hot peppers and had an adverse reaction? Did your skin begin to tingle or burn from exposure to the oils? Not to worry, there’s a simple cure.

The oils in hot peppers contain capsaicin. This is the acid that makes them hot to both your mouth and your hands. A base application will usually neutralize the burn.

Put a couple of tablespoons of baking soda into a two cup bowl and stir with your fingers. Let the burning spots on our skin remain in the mixture until the burning disappears.

You can also soak your fingers in a little milk to achieve the same result. Milk is advised for your mouth as well. Just draw some milk into your mouth and slowly swoosh it around so it comes into contact with all the affected areas. Te burning sensation should begin to lessen very quickly.
