Florida Keys
February 16th, 2006Situated in the extreme southeast of the United States, the archipelago named Florida Keys presents the most versatile marine destination in the world. The Florida Keys lie in the Florida Straits amidst two major water bodies – the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west.
The chief features of geological formation in the Florida Keys are coral reefs and partly submerged mangrove islands. In fact, the entire stretch of the Florida Keys’ island chain is the habitat of living coral barrier reef. An equally rich marine life running parallel to this coral reef comprising of Blue-striped Grunts, Bottle nose Dolphins, Lobsters, Queen Angelfish, Queen Conch, Turtles, etc. has forced the US government to establish the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to protect the marine habitation.
The Florida Keys comprises the islands of the Upper Keys, the Middle Keys and the Lower Keys. The biodiversity particular to each of these island clusters make them decidedly matchless and so your travel-itinerary should cover all the Keys.
In terms of ‘things to do’, the Florida Keys have much to offer. The abundance of life – both flora and fauna – permits the tourists to frolic amidst nature. This enjoyment, however, should be perfectly synchronized with the preservation of the natural elements without playing any pranks with the natural world around. There are certain rules and regulations that will help you in your quest for amusement and pleasure.
Swimming: The archipelago is great for your swimming adventures. However, you must make prior arrangements (reservation) for enjoying the sport.
Diving, Scuba Diving & Snorkeling: Florida keys is the right place for satisfying your diving appetite. Underwater world consisting of about 500 varieties of tropical fish, 50 varieties of living coral and other aquatic creatures make diving an irresistible sport in this part of the world. Your diving excursions will take you to the John Pennekamp State park, the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, Looe Key and many other spots in the entire stretch of the Florida Keys. The diving jaunts offer shallow reefs for snorkeling and deeper reefs for the experienced divers.
Jet skiing: Jet skiing is another popular water-sport in the Florida Keys. If you want to go skiing with the dolphins, you must take help from rental jet-ski services operating in those areas. They will not only help you with the watercraft but will also direct you to the designated areas for jet skiing.
Boating: Boating is another attraction that Florida Keys offer. Your navigational chart will come handy during your boating excursions.
Fishing: Another popular activity of the region is fishing. Florida Keys should be your destination if you enjoy fishing just for the excitement it involves and not for eating. If you are among the adventurous lot, you can enjoy offshore fishing, although fishing offers enough for even the novice!
