Fibromyalgia - What is it?

November 19th, 2005

More and more women who suffer from body aches and sleep problems are hearing the word ‘fibromyalgia’ when they visit their Doctor. What is fibromyalgia? It is a disorder affecting two to four percent of the population characterized by long term, soft fibrous tissue pain and sleep disturbances. Other symptoms which may accompany the disorder are fatigue, depression, anxiety, chronic headaches, numbness in hands and feet, morning stiffness, and irritable bowel syndrome. Symptoms and severity of pain vary greatly from patient to patient. More women than men are diagnosed with this disorder and there is no known cause or cure.

There is no simple laboratory test used to diagnose fibromyalgia. Often doctors use a process of elimination in conjunction with thorough examination and a careful health history to diagnose the disorder. There is no known cause and also no simple cure for the syndrome. Treatment includes the use of medications to manage pain and improve restorative sleep. Anti-depressants to boost serotonin and nor epinephrine (the body’s natural sleep modulators,) are often prescribed along with anti-inflammatory drugs. Many sufferers find relief from symptoms in physical or occupational therapy, an exercise program, chiropractic care, and acupuncture.

Although the disorder is chronic, symptoms usually ebb and flow and can be successfully managed with the combination of medication and lifestyle changes. If you suspect you are suffering from fibromyalgia, see a rheumatologist for a proper diagnosis. For more information, contact The National Fibromyalgia Association.

Interesting article. I have several friends who suffer from Fibro. It took them years to be diagnosed.

I sure hope you are going to continue publishing new trivia daily. I sure missed having something new to look forward to, as this is the first new one in four days. :(
