Fascinating Fish Trivia

October 27th, 2005

· There are 27,000 fish species in the world.

· A female ocean sunfish can produce more eggs than any other fish; 300 million in one spawning.

· The fastest fish in the ocean is the sailfish. It can swim 68 miles per hour (110 kilometers.)

· The walking catfish is known as Frankenfish. If no food can be found, these fish migrate from one body of water to another. Thousands can march across land like an army. If they invade a fish farm, the results are disastrous.

· The most poisonous fish on Earth is the puffer fish. Just .1 gram of toxin can kill an adult in 20 minutes or less. In Japan, it is classed as a delicacy, even though it will kill the person who eats it if it isn’t properly prepared.

These facts about fish are great. I didn’t realize that sailfish could swim so fast. That ocean sunfish lays a lot of eggs. I would like to learn more about the puffer fish. Can you write some trivia and facts about them, please?

I especially enjoyed the trivia on the Frankenfish. I’ve heard of fish marching across land, but thought it was a myth. Now I know for sure it’s not. I just “Googled it” and it’s true.

Interesting about the sailfish. I envy anyone who has ever caught one. That must be a real thrill. On another note, 27,000 fish species is a lot. There has to be a few out there that are unique, including Frankenfish. :)
