1. The name diamond refers to the hardness; it is derived from the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable.

2. Diamonds are made up of pure carbon.

3. It is almost impervious to chemical attacks. Only chromic sulphuric acid can transform diamonds at high temperatures to carbon dioxide.

4. X-rays do not penetrate diamonds.
