Today there are over 300 cities around the world with a population in excess of 1million.

Mumbai (Bombay) in India is the worlds most populated city with nearly 13 million inhabitants (within city limits). but ranks only 5th behind Tokyo, Japan which has around 35 Million when the urban area population is included.

The first city to reach a population of 1 million inhabitants was the ancient city of Rome. The Italian capital reached that number in 133BC. In 1810 London reached this mark, with New York City following sixty-five years later in 1875.
