Black Jack Term

October 27th, 2005

The only way to score a “natural Black Jack” is by being dealt a face card or ten along with an Ace.

Other combinations may equal twenty-one points, but such hands are called “Twenty-One” rather than Black Jack.

A “soft” Ace is one that is valued at one point.

A “hard” Ace is one that is valued at eleven points.

A “soft hand” occurs when a Twenty-One includes a soft Ace.

A “hard hand” occurs when a Twenty-One includes a hard Ace.

A “Bonus” is a Twenty-One made up of three sevens. Bonuses are only applicable in some areas.

“Double” is the term used when you have the option of doubling your bet because your first two cards total 9, 10, or 11.

A “split” or “double down” occurs when your first two cards have the same value. You may separate the cards and continue playing as if each one is a separate hand. You may also bet an amount equal to your original bet, on the split.

Black Jack, much like any other card game, has different rules in different areas. Because of this fact, it wise to make sure you understand the rules of each establishment before beginning play.
